Storm Chasers

Anyone watch the TV show Storm Chasers on the Discovery Channel?

Reed Timmer from the show is speaking at the University of Nebraska student union tonight and I"m going to go see it.  I think it should be pretty interesting.  Growing up in Tornado Alley I've always been interested in storms and tornadoes.  I've done some amateur storm chasing before with friends and I've found it fun.  I know it's dangerous but I like the bit of a rush I get out of it.  My chasing is nothing compared to what Reed and his crew do on the show.  In fact, Reed and his crew captured the first HD video ever shot from the inside of a tornado.  Pretty impressive stuff.  I'm thinking about buying an HD camcorder and trying to film some stuff this summer.  I think it would be fun but I also need to be careful.  I'm not a professional like the guys on this show.

Here's what these guys do.

If you watch the video you'll see some shots of Reed's vehicle, The Dominator.  Reed is going to have it at outside at the Nebraska Student Union for a few hours over lunch today.  I'm going to go see it and I'll post some pics of it later.  Should be an interesting talk.

Need some ideas...

What kind of gift cards would you guys like to see handed out for prizes in contest I plan to have on my blag once I get more followers?  Restaurants?  Stores?  Amazon?  Or maybe just a cash gift card you can use for anything?  I'm open to suggestions.

Any other ideas for prizes outside of gift cards?

Nebraska vs. #2 Texas

The Nebraska Men's basketball team takes on probably the best team in the country today.  Texas comes to Lincoln looking to give Nebraska a final parting gift as the Huskers head to the Big Ten next year while the Huskers look to manage an upset.  The way I see it Nebraska is most definitely a bubble team right now.  This is bracket busting season and I'd like to see the Huskers make it to the Big Dance this year.  Nebraska has never won a game in the NCAA Tournament but maybe, just maybe if they can get in this year they can squeak one by.

Nebraska Head Coach Doc Sadler

This would be a great win for Nebraska today and the teams RPI would skyrocket because of it.  I hope to see a win today but I won't be getting my hopes up.  Go Big Red!

If you need me I'll be in my panic room

So now the the IBM Jeopardy challenge is done we know that WATSON is superior to the two best players in Jeopardy history.  WATSON creamed Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter.

I'm going to spend the rest of the day stock piling food and weapons.  The new computer overloads are coming soon.  ;)

Friday afternoon needs to get here soon!

What's your favorite beer?

I'm going make a post about beer.  This is the first and most certainly won't be the last.  I'll try to post as much information about the beers I post on here from their brewer and some pictures I take from my phone (if I'm not already down a few and forget) as well as what I personally thought about it.

Here's today's:

Goose Island's Bourbon County Stout.  I was able to attend a keg tapping at a local bar with some of the brew masters from Goose Island.  They came to Lincoln from Chicago where the brewery is.  They explained the aging process of the beer and how they aged it in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels.  That choice surprised me.  Heaven Hill may not be the most well known bourbon out there but it it pretty good so I can't say they messed up there.  They ship this stuff out in November so if you miss it you have to wait a while but if you're lucky your local liquor store may have some in stock for a while because it's kinda of expensive.  Here I was able to buy the standard 4-pack for just under $20.  Not a bad investment if you enjoy premium beers.  Check it out sometime if you can.  Enjoy!

Here's some info I pulled from Goose Island's website on this beer:

Recipe Information:
Style: Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout
Alcohol by Volume: 13%
International Bitterness Units: 60

Hops: Willamette

Serving Suggestions:
Preferred Glass: Snifter
Food Pairings: Flourless Chocolate Cake
Cheese Pairings: Capriole Bourbon Chocolate Torte
Cellaring Notes: Develops in the bottle for up to 5 years

Coaching Changes Official????

Just read a Sports Illustrated article that says that head football coach at Nebraska Bo Pelini has confirmed that Tim Beck has been promoted to Offensive Coordinator..  It also says Bo confirmed the hiring of three other coaches.  Corey Raymond as Secondary Coach, Ross Els as Linebackers Coach and Rich Fisher will be coaching wide receivers.

Corey Raymond comes over from Indiana

Ross Els comes over from Ohio

Rich Fisher comes from The Rivers School near Boston
Stay tuned for more Husker news.  Husker men play Oklahoma tonight on the road.

EDIT:  Changes are official as per Pelini via Lincoln Journal Star

Keep up with the Cleveland Cavaliers

Having trouble keeping tabs on the Cavs?  Here, this might help.

Miss me, Cleveland?

What is going on at the University of Nebraska?

Folks, I'm a Nebraska Cornhusker fan.  Don't hold that against me, but I grew up there.  I've been a fan my entire life and I live for those seven Saturdays in the Fall in Lincoln where I can leave all my inhibitions behind and get drunk and watch football.

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini

Head Coach Bo Pelini has apparently been doing some house cleaning.  One coach has already resigned.  That was Marvin Sanders, secondary coach.  That hurts to lose.  He was a good coach and from everything I hear he resigned because of personal reasons, not professional.  If you've been paying attention to the Cornhuskers the past couple years you will have noticed an inept offense and some great defenses.  Rumor has it that Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson and Wide Receivers Coach Ted Gilmore are out.  That's ok with me.  There's been a lot of speculation about who's going to replace these coaches on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.  Nebraska has yet to make an official announcement about coaching changes but you can clearly see that they've hired new coaches already. You can read about that here.  I've looked at Huskers.com and it looks like they've changed it back already.  Probably a good move.  In fact, the new coaches shouldn't be put on the website until an official announcement is made by the University.  I'll keep you posted on this one.  Something tells me the University needs to make this announcement soon.  If you know anything about the Husker fan base it's that they don't like to be kept in the dark and that's where we are right now.

Jeopardy: The IBM Challenge

Jeopardy is probably my favorite show on TV.  Has been for years.  I take the online tests as often as they put them out so that I can possibly compete to be a contestant.  Those tests are hard people.  Have any of you ever taken the test?  Ever been called back to do an audition?

How about the IBM Challenge?  What do you think about this?  For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about, IBM has made a super computer of sorts to compete in the game of Jeopardy.  WATSON is the computers name.  WATSON is able to give the question to the answers that Alex Trebek reads within fractions of a second.  WATSON is competing against Ken Jennings (Winner of 74 consecutive contest of Jeopardy_ and Brad Rudder (the all high highest money maker on Jeopardy).  So this seems fair, right?  Two of the best contestants Jeopardy has ever seen matching wits with a computer?  After watching Jeopardy for the past two days (it's a three day contest) I've noticed some things.  WATSON is very quick to answer and dominated over the past two days, but he does answer wrong occasionally.  In fact, WATSON gave the same wrong answer as Jennings did just seconds earlier.  I think this artificial intelligence has a ways to go but IBM has sure showed that computers can do a lot.  A little creepy, but not quite Skynet yet.

We can all learn a lesson here.

The trappings of life can obviously suck us all in.  Sad Koala here is now a failure.

A Joke

I was watching a David Cross comedy special on Netflix the other day and on it was a Jewish joke.  I hadn't laughed at a dumb joke like that in a long time.  Here it is:

A Jewish boy goes up to his dad and says, "Dad, I need $50 dollars."
His dad said, "$40 dollars!?!? Why do you need $30 dollars?!?!?"

Zing.

Sandals

I wear sandals as often as I can.  Living in the Midwest makes it difficult to wear them for months in the winter.  I haven't been able to wear my sandals since October and I still have my sandal tan line on my feet.  The best sandals in the world are rainbows.  They're made in San Clemente, CA, where I lived for a time when I was working in California.  You'll find that a good percentage of people living in Southern California wear these, and there's a reason.  Check them out.  If you decide to get some someday you should keep wearing them day after day when you first get them.  They're going to hurt for a while but you need to get them broken in.  Soon they'll be like a second home to you.  Enjoy.  I'm off work and out of school for the day so I"m going to enjoy a beer or two.

First Post

Welcome to by blog.  I'm open to anything and don't take life to seriously.  You shouldn't either.

Here's a picture of what I should have looked like as a kid and if I ever have kids this is pretty similar to what I'm going to force them to look like until they can make their own decisions.  My interests include Nebraska Cornhusker football and basketball, alcohol, cooking, reading, humor, and traveling.  I'll talk about these a lot and whatever else comes to mind.
